My ten cents

Dr. Aggrey Willis Otieno is a tenure track Assistant Professor at the College for Humanities and Social Sciences at Utah State University, as well as a Tutorial Fellow at Ohio University, USA. He is an award-winning scholar with expertise in social media, data analytics, digital engagement, program development and evaluation, child protection and Health Communication. He has more than 20 years of resourceful work experience in industry consulting, key note speaking for various international organizations, and championing social and behavior change in Africa, Latin America and the USA, especially in child protection, promotion of social justice, and health. His professional engagements and community service have won several international awards. For example, the 2022 IFP Alumni research award, the 2016 Excellence in Global Leadership Award; 2013 African Children Hero award, the 2012-2014 Rolex Laureate, and the 2009-2011 Ford Foundation International Fellowship award among others.

As a Computational social scientist with professional interests in Communication for Social Change, Dr. Otieno is passionate about presenting data science to technical and non-technical audiences. His research endeavors focusses on understanding how emerging technologies and data can be leveraged to gain valuable insights and solve global challenges.  He makes use of big data and analytics to understand the effects of new media on society and organizations. Specifically, his research endeavors are on user engagement in online environments and how user-generated content influences change in attitude, opinions, perceptions, and behavior in child protection, health, civic activism, and politics. He has published scholarly peer-reviewed journal articles on social media engagement, health communication, and child protection. He has also been examining the impact of social media on mental health among young adults in Africa and USA.

Dr. Otieno is committed to training and mentoring the next generation of media, communication for social change, and philanthropy scholars. He regularly teaches graduate and undergraduate students, NGO executives, journalists, government officials and community resource persons how to leverage data analytics and the broader Social and Behavior Change Communication techniques for competitive advantage.

  2. From little acorns do great oaks grow. I will be there, say 50 years down the line, when Pambazuko Mashinani will be comparable to Ford Foundation because of the many lives it will have changed!
